Students for Recycling
The Students for Recycling program is through Keep America Beautiful and is sponsored by Sam's Club and Aquafina. KHSB signs up schools to participate and they compete with each other and with schools across the country to collect the most #1 plastic. All of the affiliates get a small grant to fund the program and the top 50 collecting schools win a $1000 gift card to Sam's Club and another one for their local affiliate. Schools in the top 100 get items made from #1 plastic. We measure by adding the total number of pounds of plastic divided by the number of students enrolled in that school. In 2007 the Alternative school won backpacks made from recycled plastic by collecting 9 lbs. per student. This program was also the one that began our recycling efforts here in Hot Springs.
